Driver Rehabilitation

Trips to the grocery store. Meeting friends for lunch or dinner. Trips to see your grandchildren. These are privileges that can be under-appreciated until they are taken away from you. Driving provides a sense of independence, convenience, and freedom which allows individuals to be active participants in their community.

In order to maintain this independence, driving also requires important skills to ensure safety, such as: quick reactions times, good hearing and vision, and good overall strength and endurance.

We can all agree that driving is a skilled task that leaves little room for uncertainty. The Right Turn offers a unique program designed to help those affected by physical or cognitive impairments return to driving.

From comprehensive driving assessments to referrals for in-vehicle training and vehicle modifications, the Right Turn is your ally in ensuring a safe driving environment.

Our comprehensive driving evaluations can be modified to meet the client’s needs to provide them with the best solution possible. The clinical evaluation combined with the behind-the-wheel assessment, provide extensive insight to determine driver ability and readiness.

How the Driver Rehabilitation program works:

STEP 1: A physician, family member, therapist, or case manager of the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) expresses concern for the client’s safety while driving.

Step 2: If the MVA expresses concern, the client receives a packet of information from the MVA, including a list of driving programs to contact in order to complete a “comprehensive assessment” by a specified deadline.

A prescription from a medical doctor is needed if a physician, family member, or other medical professional request a driving evaluation. Once the script is obtained, the client/family member can contact The Right Turn to set a date to begin the comprehensive driving assessment.

Step 3: The clinical assessment is completed in the client’s home. The driving assessment includes familiar and unfamiliar roads near the client’s home.

Step 4: After completion driving evaluation, The Right Turn communicates the results with the client and discusses any necessary restrictions or recommendations.

Step 5: The Right Turn provides a detailed report outlining any restrictions. This report is sent to the client, the physician who wrote the prescription, and the MVA (if they are involved).

If you are unsure of your driving abilities, or the abilities of a loved one or client due to physical or cognitive changes, The Right Turn can help you!
